Bretonnia is a feudal kingdom of knights and peasants, ruled by a warrior aristocracy devoted to the chivalric code and the worship of the Lady of the Lake — a mysterious goddess believed to be an aspect of the Elven deity Lileath. Bretonnian knights are among the finest cavalry in the world, their lances and destriers the terror of any battlefield.

Bretonnia was forged from the disparate tribes of the Bretonni people by the legendary Gilles le Breton, who was blessed by the Lady of the Lake and united the dukedoms under a single crown. The kingdom has since endured invasions by Orcs, Chaos, and the undead, each time relying on the martial prowess of its knightly orders to prevail. The Grail Quest — a sacred pilgrimage to find the Lady's Grail — defines the highest aspiration of every Bretonnian knight.

Bretonnian armies are built around the thunderous charge of their knightly orders — Knights Errant, Knights of the Realm, Questing Knights, and the legendary Grail Knights, who have drunk from the Lady's Grail and been blessed with near-immortality. Peasant levies provide supporting infantry, while the feared Trebuchets and Pegasus Knights add range and mobility.

Bretonnian society is rigidly divided between the noble warrior class and the peasant majority. Knights live by the Chivalric Code — a strict set of virtues including honour, courage, and devotion to the Lady. The Grail Quest is the ultimate spiritual journey, and those who complete it become Grail Knights, revered as living saints. Peasants, by contrast, live in near-serfdom, their lives defined by toil and the protection of their lords.
